The Unexpected Soundtrack of Getting Older

Mar 21, 2026

If you’ve noticed yourself making more involuntary noises – groaning when you stand up, sighing as you sit down, or grunting during everyday movements – you’re not alone. According to an expert from the University of Virginia, these familiar “middle-age sounds” are a normal part of how the body changes over time.

As we age, the body naturally becomes less efficient. Muscles lose strength and elasticity, joints stiffen, and movement requires slightly more effort. These small physical adjustments can trigger audible responses, like a grunt or sigh, as the body transitions between positions or exerts force. In simple terms, the noises are often a by-product of effort and coordination rather than a sign of something being wrong.

The Sounds of Living

There is also a neurological component. Sounds such as grunts or exhalations can help stabilise the body during movement by engaging core muscles and regulating breathing. Athletes, for example, often use controlled exhalation to improve strength and performance. In everyday life, these sounds may serve a similar, if unconscious, function.

Beyond the physical, there may be a psychological element. As people become more aware of bodily sensations or discomfort, they may be more likely to vocalise them. What might have been ignored or suppressed earlier in life becomes more noticeable…and more audible!

Importantly, these sounds are usually harmless. They do not necessarily indicate injury or decline, but rather reflect normal age-related changes in strength, mobility and awareness. However, if noises are accompanied by significant pain, stiffness or reduced mobility, it may be worth seeking medical advice.

In short, those familiar groans and sighs are less a sign of ageing “going wrong” and more a reflection of the body adapting; a small, human signal that movement now requires just a little more effort than it once did.
