While these sugar substitutes are often marketed as a healthier alternative to sugar, particularly for weight management and diabetes, their long-term effects on brain health are becoming a growing area of concern.
The research looked at the following sweeteners: aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame-K, erythritol, xylitol, sorbitol, and tagatose (the latter of which did not have an impact in the study). It suggests that people who frequently consume artificially sweetened drinks may face a higher risk of memory problems, reduced cognitive function and even dementia over time. Some studies have found associations between daily intake of diet beverages and a greater likelihood of stroke and cognitive decline, particularly when consumed over many years.
