Regular exercise is well known to protect long-term health, but research suggests cycling in particular may offer unique benefits for ageing and male vitality. Studies led by researchers at King’s College London and the University of Birmingham, published in Ageing Cell examined amateur cyclists aged 55 to 79 who had remained highly active for decades. The male participants were able to cycle 100km in under 6.5 hours, indicating sustained endurance fitness.
High Testosterone, Low Body Fat & Healthy Cholesterol
Compared with typical age-related patterns, these older male cyclists had higher testosterone levels, a hormone that normally declines with age and plays a key role in sex drive, bone density and muscle strength.
The cyclists also showed lower body fat, healthier cholesterol levels and greater muscle mass and strength than average for their age. Notably, their thymus glands, responsible for producing immune T cells and known to shrink from early adulthood, were functioning more like those of younger adults, suggesting preserved immune health.
Further research published in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders compared trained middle-aged cyclists with inactive peers. The cyclists, who had trained for an average of 15 years, had stronger, larger and metabolically healthier leg muscles. They also had significantly less fat infiltration in muscle tissue, a change associated with ageing, sarcopenia and increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
While these studies focused on highly committed cyclists, the broader message is practical: consistent moderate to vigorous physical activity supports healthier ageing. Current NHS guidance recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity weekly. Cycling at higher intensity, such as uphill riding, can count as vigorous exercise, meaning even short daily sessions can contribute to meaningful long-term benefits for muscle, hormone and cardiovascular health.
