Financial Confidence Low Among Middle Aged Due to Cost of Living Crisis

Feb 21, 2026

A newly released survey highlights mounting financial strain among those aged 50 and older, a demographic that plays a significant role in both economic and political life. Although focused on women, according to a poll conducted by AARP, just over half of respondents in this age group say they are worse off financially than they were a year ago.

Confidence about retirement readiness remains low. Only 11% describe themselves as “very confident” they will have enough money to live comfortably in retirement, while 33% say they are “somewhat confident.” The findings suggest that persistent inflation, uncertainty around pensions and broader economic instability are undermining long-term financial security. Rising everyday living costs rank as the top concern among those over 50.

The findings point to a widening gap between retirement expectations and economic reality. With longer life expectancy, lower lifetime earnings on average, and greater likelihood of caregiving responsibilities, people in this age group may face compounded risks. The survey underscores the importance of accessible financial guidance and policy stability in restoring confidence among this influential demographic.
